Why we had to build it new

Hi,

I am Kola, Founder of RideBits. I have spent fifteen years in ground transportation software, working with a small team and with operators whose conversations and bug reports shaped everything we made. In 2012 I built RideBits because I didn’t like the options, and thousands of operators have booked millions of trips on it since. This letter is about why, after all of that, we just built something completely new.

Here is the observation that started it. Transportation software — ours included — got very good at storing the trip and sending messages about it. And still, the moment plans moved, the real work left the system. Did the driver read the text? Did the client see the change? Nobody knows — so the operator picks up the phone and confirms, both directions, every trip, every day. The software holds the records and sends the alerts, but the operator is still the network.

A booking is one event that touches three people — a client, a driver, and the operator who brings them together — and every change touches them again. Software built for only one of them doesn’t remove the coordination. It just decides the operator will do it by hand, forever. Fifteen years of building software around the booking, and the realization was this: the booking was never the system. The people were.

So the idea became simple to say and radical to build: one system where all three sides are first-class, and one action moves everyone it touches. Instantly. Assign a driver — the driver has the job and the client knows someone is coming. Move a pickup time — everybody’s plan corrects itself. Tap once. Everyone knows. Not notified — knows. The truth doesn’t have to be sent and hoped for. It is simply there, for everyone, at once.

I would have preferred to get there by evolution, and the limit was never quality. It was the foundation. Everything the industry had built, ours included, was built the same way: for the web, for the desk, one account per company, a page you refresh to learn the truth. This idea had to be built differently, from the ground up. Phone-first, because transportation happens in motion. One identity across companies, because a driver may work with three operators and a client may rely on five — and none of them should exist five times over. Live everywhere, because “refresh to find out” is the whole disease. What came out is not more features on the same foundation; it is the thing an entire transportation company runs on, every side of it, live. That is why we call it an operating system. Some things can only be built new.

Phone-first deserves more than a line, because we took it further than anyone expects. Operators don’t just dispatch from the phone. You set up your company on it, connect Stripe on it, invite your drivers, share your booking link, even send your web developer the instructions from it. Why squeeze the power of a computer into a screen you can cover with your thumb?

Because the constraint is the opportunity. A small screen forces clarity: every step has to be obvious, or it doesn’t fit. And an operator who can run the business from a phone truly runs it on the move — from the car, the curb, the kitchen table — instead of from wherever the desk is. For clients the case makes itself: the world has already learned to book a ride on a phone, and once everyone is in one app, a change arrives inside the same system the trip lives in. No email or text relay to send and hope for. Drivers, on your fleet or a partner’s, learned the same habits from ride-hailing; RideBits just makes it easy.

Will there be more for the desk, especially for operators? Almost certainly. But there is no better way to learn what a transportation company truly needs than to run it from the phone first and see where it pushes back. We fix what we find. That is how it evolves.

There were also things we refused to build. This is not a marketplace. Your clients are yours — we will never put a competitor next to your booking page, and we don’t introduce strangers; we give relationships that already exist better infrastructure.

I still believe what I wrote here in 2019: independent operators win on service — on being the company that answers, that shows up, that a client trusts with their mother at the airport. Everything in the new RideBits exists to make you that kind of company: organized, responsive, impossible to catch off guard — from the phone in your pocket.

And to our operators on RideBits today: this is not an upgrade, and nothing is being taken away. It is a different idea for a different way of running. Some businesses are built around the dispatch desk and should be. Some live in a pocket. We now build for both, and we are proud of both.

We have written down what we believe transportation software should be: the RideBits Manifesto.

The all-new RideBits Transportation OS opens soon. Claim your handle on the waitlist and you’ll be first through the door. Fifteen years in, we are still building this the same way: with you.
